My Virtual School Prison!

So many people have no true understanding of what virtual school has meant for the parent managing virtual school or for the children who are attending full-time virtual school. This is not homeschooling because there are no resources. I cannot take my kids to a learning lab at Discovery World to learn with other homeschooled children. This is virtual school during a pandemic and it is killing our souls, our futures, and our love of learning.

I am writing this partly in response to conversations I’ve had with teachers and others who, to my surprise, have a very shallow understanding of what is going on in family’s homes, for real. While that last sentence sounds like a critique of our teachers, I am not critiquing their work, just their understanding of what lays behind a child’s screen. Teachers have been amazing and I know they are truly doing their best in this environment. I am thankful for my sons’ teachers.

But what I’m saying here seriously needs to be said so that others have a more complete picture. I am most likely speaking for more than just my family, but for certain, this is our reality.

One of my sons was critiqued for not always being ready for his class. He has a desk with a cubby next to huge drawers, from the Container Store, for his school supplies. Each day after school I ask him to put his things away to finish his day, but…
